Having a beautiful white face is always our goal. What causes those nasty brown stains? There are so many answers to that question! When Maltese pups are young and nursing, the protein from their mother's milk tends to cause some browning on the mouth area. You have to keep them clean, clean, clean.
When the Maltese puppy is weaned and you having an issue, check their ears-----are they dirty? Do they smell yeasty? Look at the teeth and gums-----is the pup cutting teeth? Is an older Maltese having some gum issues or nasty looking teeth? What about environmental issues----smoke, pollution, etc. These issues must all be dealt with before you can have a clear white face. Genetics also play a role in tear staining.
