The diet of your new puppy is very important.
The baby Yorkie or Maltese puppy should not be changed off the food he is familiar with for at least a month, then if you must change, do so gradually. We feed a premium dry kibble. Our first choices are Royal Canin, and Eukanuba (I even like to mix the two!). The dry food is left out free choice (for the puppy to eat as much as he wants) 24/7. The babies don't eat much of the dry at first since they don't have many teeth. In addition to the dry food, we feed a wet food 3
times per day. We offer them Cesar Dinners. Their favorites are Gourmet (of course!), puppy, or chicken. The baby should eat about 1 small container in a day's time. If the pup is very small or doesn't eat well, we feed a mixture of 1/3 Baby Food Pureed Chicken---yes, real human baby food and 2/3 Baby Food Rice Cereal with enough plain yogurtmixed in to make a gruel, they prefer this warm. This wet food is fed until we gradually wean them to a total diet of the dry kibble. Some Yorkie and Maltese pups take longer for the adjustment than others do. Treats should be kept to a minimum. I do like the Natural Choice Biscuits made by Nutro. We use Honey Comb, Rice Chex or Cheerios cereal, a little chicken or cheese instead of the commercial dog treats because of the high fat content in some products. It is not that we are concerned about the weight of the pup but their little bodies can't process that much fat----it is unhealthy.
I use small heavy ceramic bowl such as the one pictured. They can easily go into the dish washer when needed and they don't tip over like the metal bowls do.
