Dog Noses
|
| I saw the most interesting program on one of those "educational" channels while waiting at the vet's office the other day. It was on the dog's nose and how it is different from our own human noses. Did you know that a dog's nose as 100 Million smell detecting cells while we just have 5 million! The program went on to show why a dog smells all around on your shoes, feet and legs whenever you come home, the dog can tell everywhere you have been. Of course we all have seen the dogs at the school and airports sniffing for drugs, bombs etc. but one of the most interesting to me is the Bloodhound and how he is trained to look for people that are lost or kidnapped. Tim and I were watching one of those true life crime dramas and a Bloodhound actually tracked a kidnapped child that was put into a car and driven down the highway! The car had driven on the outside lane and the air conditioner was on and so her scent was deposited along the side of the road. The dog belonged to the local police department and he and the handler ran along the road. The child was located a couple of miles from her home before she was harmed. The dog is a very amazing creature. |
