A Letter to the Friends of Gumwood and Vicky,
It is with great sadness that we tell you Vicky passed away following a battle with colon cancer. She was an extraordinary woman, a wonderful mother, and an incredible wife. She loved these wonderful dogs, and we plan to continue her legacy by raising these dogs as a family.
Thank you to all those who have shown us such support and kindness during this time of great sorrow. Vicky touched so many lives through her charity work as well as our puppies and she is greatly missed by so many. We truly value your continued support and the dogs that she loved so dearly.
Sincerely,
The Welch Famiy~ Tim, Erin, & Ben
OUR FAMILY STORY
We are native Texans, living just outside the Dallas Ft. Worth metroplex (Texas). Vicky grew up showing animals in FFA and 4-H from the time she was just a kid. I graduated from Tarleton State University and Vicky graduated from Hill College. We have 2 children that are our pride and joy. The kennel name, Ben-Er, is a combination of their names, Ben and Erin. Vicky had several clients ask her for pictures of our home and family so she kindly provided some below! The first two pictures shows the front of our home-----Vicky LOVED pink flowers and thanks to some hard work on both our parts, we now have 30+ pink rose bushes! The third picture is our daughter Erin at her graduation from Texas Tech Law School (she got her bachelor's from the University of Texas in Austin). The fouth picture is myself and our son Ben out riding, then there is Vicky----the beautiful red head. Next is Ben graduating from Texas Tech in December 2009, pictured with his beautiful girlfriend Jessica. Our daughter's wedding was one of Vicky's greatest joys in life! She was so excited and planned almost every detail herself! Erin and Cody had the most beautiful wedding on January 29, 2011, followed by a honeymoon in The Bahamas. It was the perfect wedding and we are so happy that Vicky was there to see it.
Vicky and I have been around dogs all of our lives. Vicky grew up with Border Collies that were true workers and top hands on her parent's ranch and Tim grew up participating in Field Trials with some great German Shorthaired Pointers and English Springer Spaniels. One of the first things that we did after we moved into our first house was to get 2 dogs----a rescued Poodle and a Border collie mix puppy. When we had children we needed to look for a dog that did not shed or cause any allergic reactions, as our kids were bothered with allergies, leading us to Yorkies and Maltese. These two breeds make wonderful pets for someone suffering from allergies. We then purchased several Champion Show dogs from Gumwood Kennel when Sheryl Mackey retired.
We owe our success to many many breeders that went before us and molded the look of the dog that we breed today, that short, square body with large expressive eyes, a baby doll face, and sweet nature. Our first champions and breeding stock came from Gumwood, Marcris and Hi Lite, we also have little darlings with Wildweir, Chelsea Nimar, Mayfair, Kajimanor, Caromaya, Master Showcase, Keolis, Fantasyland, and Cedarwood Championship breeding.
Many people have a misunderstanding of what it means to have a dog with "papers". They do not really know what AKC (American Kennel Club) papers are or their importance. The AKC is a registry body that issues registration certificates that we call the "AKC Papers". Some confusion has occurred over full or limited registration. Full registration means that the dog may be shown and bred. Limited registration simply means that puppies from that dog cannot be registered. The papers are limited to that dog, but the dog is still an AKC registered dog. AKC now includes DNA testing. We are AKC inspected and DNA tested. We believe that the best way to purchase a dog is directly from a show breeder, this ensures that you obtain a dog that is both sound in mind, body, and spirit. The pet purchase is no less important than the show purchase, both will be a part of your family for many years to come. Vicky and I have always wanted to ensure that you receive the best quality dog.
The noted English geneticist, Dr. E. Fitch Daglish, says: "In breeding we can only get in a litter the qualities which are put into it through the parents, so that it is unreasonable to expect to produce top-class puppies unless care is taken when arranging a mating that all the qualities we wish to obtain are represented genetically in one or other of the parents; the ideal being that both the sire and dam shall possess as many of the characteristics desired as possible."
